While a small aerial robot like MAV attracts attention, insect-sized aerial robot is expected to do well. If it lives out, it will be used in the various ways: for example, rescue at the disaster scene or application to the navigation system.<\/p>\n

To realize insect-sized robot, it will be effective to imitate the way insects flap wing. Even among various insects, mosquitos flap their wings in the unique way. Most insects support their weight using leading-edge vortices when they flight. On the other hand, mosquitos do it using not only leading-edge vortices, but also two unique mechanisms, trailing-edge vortices and rotational drag. Moreover, they can flap wings at remarkably high frequencies caused by their small stroke angle. Because of them, mosquitos can flight more flexibly and stably.<\/p>\n

If we can develop a robot that imitates the way mosquito flaps wing, it will lead to the development of small-sizes aerial robots. So, in my research, with a goal of imitation of the way mosquito flights with an actuator, I\u2019m doing research about the insects-flapping mechanism. Through learning about insects\u2019 flight, making various-shaped wing, driving with an actuator and observation of aerodynamic mechanisms, I will explore what is essential to imitate a mosquito.<\/p>\n
